Major hard drive crash - new drive, new install of outlook 2002. Used rescue
software to reclaim most recent .pst - ran scanpst - repaired - won't open.

attempted to open an old .pst saved elsewhere, asks for password - won't
take my standard password.

If you are trying to open it with FIle>Open>Outlook Data File and that is
failing, make sure you're the owner, make sure it's not read-only, run
scanpst one more time, and try again. If it still fails, chalk it off to
experience, because your old mail is toast.

More info - already ran scanpst a second time and said file was okay. Wasn't
read only. STRANGE PHENOMENON - after several attempts, it restored most
(not all) of my directory structure and created a new folder with some
ancient emails in it. All other folders were empty. The .pst is 125 MB.
The crash recovery utility says it's okay. Are there other .pst recovery or
rebuilding utilities? (Offer me some hope, please)

None that aren't commercial. You may be able to find a tool you can buy.
Google for "recover PST"
