Recovering an overwritten file

Gerry,

Unless you have a backup file somewhere, you are out of luck. You
can't recover an overwritten file.

You
can't recover an overwritten file.

That's technically true, but there is an option available to governments
and megacorporations.
If you haven't used the hard drive at all since you overwrote it, it is
possible to look at the drive with a sensitive magnetometer and look for
the residue of the previous bits. But this requires access to extremely
specialized equipment and technicians, and would probably cost tens of
thousands of dollars, maybe even more.

I nominate this for most pedantic post of the week (that's a
compliment coming from me!)
