recovering corrupt(?) file

I can't seem to open a file that I had open earlier today. I'm using
excel v.x for mac osx. When I try to open the file there is a quick
"flash" as if it is trying to read the file and then nothing happens.
Excel is hasn't crashed, no error messages, but no open (or hidden)
file. I can open the file in Word, but I'd like to retain the
formulas.

Any ideas of how to proceed?

TIA

If the file is not hidden, can you see it in the windows menu? What, if
anything is on the screen after you open it? Is the behavior you described
from double clicking on the file or opening it from the file menu? If the
file is visible in the windows menu, try windows-Arrange, check active
document.

The file doesn't show in the windows menu. No worksheet
shows on the screen (unless another one is already open)
after opening file. This is true whether I open by double
clicking on file name, or open through the file menu using
recent items or the open command.

Are you sure the file is not hidden? Look in the windows-unhide menu. Maybe
the file has a macro which closes it immediately. I'll be happy to take a
look at it for you.
