recovering lost data in powerpoint

my wife (an eye doctor) bought powerpoint yesterday and
spent 6-8 hours preparing a presentation for a medical
conference (taking place this weekend). her sister (also
an eye doctor) came over tonight and she and my wife
prepared a 2nd presentation for my wife's sister. by
mistake, they saved the 2nd presentation over the 1st
one. is there any way to recover the presentation that
was over-written? (i doubt it). thanks anyone for your
help.

Not unless she has a backup copy. Now's a good time to stress the
importance of always keeping a backup copy of critical files, and this is
most important for PowerPoint presentations. You can get a free add-in
called "Sequential Save" that will add a button to the toolbar and when you
click on it, your file will be saved *AND* a backup copy will be made at the
same time. It's at

Another possibility would be to check the temp files. There is a small
chance that PowerPoint made a temp file of the presentation that was not
overwritten. This is not guarantied, quick or fun, but may be easier than
recreating your wife's presentation, especially if she has a tech that can
play with it between patients.

One at a time, locate a temp file of about the correct size and copy it to
your desktop. Rename file as XXX.PPT. Try to open it. If it does not open
or is not the correct file, delete it and try the next temp file.

The process (depending on the number of temp files) may take longer than
just redoing the presentation, now that she has had practice in creating
what she wants.
