Periodically students will get an error message when trying to open a
presentation. The message is can't open this type of file with PowerPoint.
Is there any way to open the presentation?

Also, be sure that your students never save a file directly to a floppy disk or
other removable media. They should always save the file to the hard disk and
then copy/paste or drag and drop it to a floppy. PowerPoint just doesn't handle
removable media well and saving to a floppy is the best way to corrupt a
presentation.
