I have put a few birthdays in my Outlook calendar. How do I prevent them
from showing up as my first appointment (ie 12/17/1944)? I have tried
filtering by date, and by active appointment.

What version of Outlook and how are you adding them to the calendar? They
are best added by inserting this data into the details tab of your contact
for that person.
