Although I have not seen the online demos for Project Professional 2003, I
would suspect that the Status Indicator column you have seen in the demos is
a different column from the Status Indicator column that is included by
default with the software. The default Status Indicator column only
displays the four symbols you indicate, and is actually based on the default
Status field which displays words rather than symbols.
Many users of Project 2002 and 2003 create custom fields to track the status
of their projects and project tasks. For example, I have multiple columns
in my own projects that use stoplights to indicate progress. The stoplights
show the Cost, Work, and Schedule status of each task and for the entire
project, and I use my own tests to determine whether a green, yellow, red,
or other stoplight indicator is displayed in the field. I also use the same
fields in custom Views I have created in the Project Center and detailed
Project views in Project Web Access.
I think that you will need to create your own custom stoplight indicator
fields to represent the status measurements that you seek. Simply create
one or more custom fields, enter formulas to measure status, and then
replace the formulas with the indicators. Hope this helps.

I am using Microsoft Project Pro 2003. In the online demos and help menus,
the status indicator column uses a stoplight chart (red, yellow, green) of
icons to indicate the current status of a project. However, when I use this
field in my project, I have different icons (checkmark, checkmark w/
exclamation pt, or blank). Is there a default setting I need to change to
get the stoplight icons to be used? If I need to use some form of
programming, such as VB, is there a link to an example or could someone tell
me what to do? Thanks for any help you offer.
