reducing file size for web presentation

Hello

I am making some Powerpoint presentations for use on a website and they
include audio narration.
I used the very handy method of converting mp3s to riff-wav files in order
to embed them from here:
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00155.htm

current file size is about 9 mb - still too big for web use
The audio is made up of small clips which play when each slide loads

For web use would it be better to link to these files rather than embed
them?
Would this mean the audio is only loaded as each slide is activated
therefore speeding up delivery?

Any other tips welcome

many thanks
Chink!
