Reducing PDF size created from PPT 2008

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

I find that when I generate a PDF from my Powerpoint 2008 that the files are the same size as the ppt file and I am no longer able to reduce the file size using Acrobat Pro. The error message that I receive from Acrobat is "An error was encountered while processing the images". That same file ppt, converted to a PDF from Powerpoint 2004 generates a PDF that can be reduced in size. Is there a solution to this problem?
