reference to dao 6

Is there any way to refer to DAO 6 in the object library on opening the form
without manually going to to tools-reference-dao 6 and clicking on it ?

Perhaps you mean DAO 3.6? anyway - you can not set references in runtime.
but you can get reference to DBEngine as:

dim DBEngine as object
Set DBEngine = CreateObject("DAO.DBEngine.36")
