Reformatting hard drive and want to save messages

I need to reformat my hard drive and want to save my outlook messages to an
external drive somehow so I can get them back afterwards. I can't figure out
from the help how to do this, and any assistance will be much appreciated.

I'm using Outlook 2002, XPPro with SP3.

The file you need is your Personal Folders file (*.pst) It's where all the
mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored.
