Refusal to open doc

M

mthwread

I open Word. I open files. I go to the document I want and I try and open
it and it says (in a little box in the center of the screen):

Word cannot open the document.
Try one or more of the following:
*On the File menu, click Open to open the document.
*Make sure the document has a .DOC extension.
(C:\...\CHAPTER BY CHAPTER\CHAPTER 1.DOC)
OK

Now, I tried suggestion 1 and the same thing happened.
For suggestion 2, I went to the document, right-clicked on it, went to
rename and added .DOC to the end.

I still get the same message when I try and open it. I have no idea what
might be different about this document to others in the same folder that do
open.

Can anyone help here?

Just because you add ,doc to the file name doesn't make it a word file.

Yes, but it is a Word File with a Word Icon, saved as a Word File and which
previously opened as a Word File...

Why do you have to add the .doc?

I don't know. Because that's what it says, it opens a little box that says
exactly as I wrote on the opening of this thread. The computer told me to
check it was saved as a .doc, so I did and renamed it, and that did nothing...

I got the file and it won't open for me. I suspect that file is corrupt. I
hope you have a good back-up of it somewhere.

Oh dear, no I don't have a back up of it... I scanned it with Norton and
that showed nothing untoward. Is there absolutely nothing I can do? And do
you have any idea of how it might have become corrupt, because I have no idea
how whatsoever, it's not like it's happened before and with the nature of my
work I can't really be doing with it happening again.

But thank you for all your efforts, I really 100% appreciate it.

Norton can't tell if a file is corrupt.

Without knowing the history of the file, there's no way to tell. If you are
in the habit of saving directly to a floppy or a CD, stop it. If you are in
the habit of opening a file directly from a floppy or a CD, stop it. Those
two actions can corrupt a file.
