The limit to install is on three of the computers. What if I install it on a
computer, but then have to reformat it and reinstall Office? Would that
count as an additional installation?

Hi Sasha,

Ordinarily that would be okay :) If you have difficulty activating using the online method you can use the telephone activation
method.

So how do I let MicroSoft know that the second install is on the same
computer? I mean, is there anything I can do before I format my computer,
such as uninstalling the product, to let MicroSoft know that? Or does
MicroSoft not keep up with the number of times installed?

It's got more to do with if it detects differences in the hardware on the
system. http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/activation_faq.mspx has some info.
"Activations on the same PC using the same product key are unlimited.
Product Activation discourages piracy by limiting the number of times a
product key can be activated on different PCs."

If you're reinstalling on your system and are prompted to activate by phone,
just explain to the the person that you reformatted. It shouldn't be a
problem. Even minor hardware changes shouldn't really be a problem -- like
if you add more RAM or a new video card or something.
