I am using PowerPoint 97 with Windows XP Professional
operating system. I don't know how to respond to this
error message when trying to open a presentation saved
earlier: A registered converter was not found and may
need to be reinstalled.

Was the presentation originally created on this same setup or is it from a
different one?
It sounds as though it might be the latter, and that the setup that created
it had some graphics filters or other option installed that isn't present on
your computer.

Will the presentation open anyhow? If so, can you locate anything that's
missing on one of the slides?
That might give you a clue as to what options you need to install.

Otherwise, you might want to rerun setup, choose Custom and browse to the
graphics filters; make sure there's a check next to each of them and let
setup install them. Also consider adding things like Org Chart, Graph and
so on, if theyr'e not already installed.
