Running xp pro on Dell P4 with 1 gig ram, office 2003
I have been having trouble with Word Documents opening v-e-r-y slowly (like
15 seconds for even the simplest document) Starting a new email in Outlook is
also very slow. I did a complete uninstall and reinstall and it is the same!!
I thought that would surely solve the problem. Did a total virus scan and
clear. This is very frustrating...any ideas?

Sounds like a hardware issue. to me. On your system this should be nice and
brisk.

Here are a few things you can try a few things before going to far out in
attempting to fix this issue.

Eliminate unneeded processes. Retail machines like your Dell come with a
lot of stuff that is set to run on startup. take all times out of your
startup folder and use the "msconfig" utility if you are familiar with it.

check for spyware if that was not covered in your virus scan.

use the disk checking and defrag tools.

run a regestry cleaner such as CClean.

I appreciate your taking time to reply; I should have explained some issues,
but wanted to keep it brief. Other aps, including Photoshop CS, run fine.
Even Excel starts and runs fine. But Word opens very slow, files even slower.
Replying or writing new emails in Outlook even take awhile to start. HOWEVER,
if I start Word with "winword.exe /a" in RUN (something I came across while
researching the problem), the application and files open nearly instantly,
which leads me to believe it is an Office problem, especially seeing as
reinstall did not help. Maybe a conflict of some kind? Thanks for listening.
