Reinstalling Office 2003 Problem

Fred

Had a virus on my HP laptop running Vista ... the tech eventually reinstalled
Vista. When I try to reinstall Office 2003 from an Upgrade disk I am asked
to insert Office 97 which I do and it is now on my computer ... 2003
installation goes to the point of showing the progress download screen but it
never downloads ... no activity after entering the product key, agreeing to
the Agreement, etc. Have it loaded on two other computers. Also, Works will
no longer open ... is this all a Vista reload problem? Thanks.

Uninstall any & all versions of Office shown in the add/remove dialogue
(including any trial and its activation assistant), reboot your PC
Assuming Works was reinstalled during the first recovery / reinstall, does
works start, is it found when Works is entered in the Start >search bar?

PS Office 2003 is not licensed to be installed on 3 PC's

DL, Thanks for the response ... regarding Works ... I get a message when
trying to launch .... "... cannot access one or more files it need to run.
The files may have been renamed, deleted or moved. Try reinstalling
Mircosoft Works, and then starting again." I don't know how to rinstall
Works .. it came installed on my laptop ... could this be directly related to
my problem with installing Office 2003?

It sounds like whatever means of recovery to origonal specs was used, didnt
complete correctly.
Was a recovery disk used, or recovery from a hidden partition?
Is there any data on this PC that hasnt been backed up?
I think at this stage I would recover the laptop to origonal spec, using
procedure outlined by HP (Destructive recovery)
Then use MSupdate, once Vista is updated and ok, then ensure you uninstall
any trial version of Office and its activation assistant, then reboot.
When you start the office 2003 installation, if it complains it cannot find
a qualifying app, you swap the 2003 disk with the old office disk and browse
to it, once confirmed re swap disk and continue with the installation. (If
any run dialogue starts/opens when you insert the old disk, cancel that
dialogue)

PS when you recover your HP, whatever antivirus trial that was installed
obviously requires updating
