Reinstalling .pst in Outlook 2002

Adprof

I have been trying to open the .pst files I saved a week ago, before my files
got messed up. However, when I use the FILE>OPEN DATA FILE, or FILE>IMPORT
commands to get to the files saved on a cd, I am told that I do not have
permission to acces the file. In checking the files I see they are recorded
as "Read Only" Does anyone know how I can gain access (or permission ) so I
can recover my lost .pst files?

Remove the read only attribute.
Never import PST files. Only open them.

I have beebn trying to do so, however, when I attempt to remove the "read
only" attribute I get the following message: "an error occurred applying
attributes to the file. Access is denied."

Why didn't you say so in the first place? You have created a different
permissions issue which we cannot address without knowing what you did.

Unfortunately, I don't know, but here is whatled up to the situation:

My Outlook 2002 .pst file became corrupted (running on Windows XP/SP-2). I
was able to fix and re-establish folders (running scanpst), but one problem
remains. While I can compose and send email with Outlook, I am unable to
receive email. Clicking on “Send/Receive" produces the message “The operation
failed†All of my incoming email goes into Outlook Express. And, while I can
import the Outlook Express messages into Outlook, I am unable to receive in
Outlook.

Now the waters have gone from muddy to completely black. You aren't even
talking about a PST issue. You've changed subjects completely.
Take it from the top with a clear description of your problem and the steps
that can reproduce it.

You have to copy pst to HD, do NOT overwrite any existing pst.
Remove read only attribute - in IE pst properties.
Then start OL, File/Open/Data File .....browse to location.

Thank you for your patience and willingness to help. As far as I can recall,
this is how the problem started.

It started when I tried to open an email message that had an attachment.
When I tried to open the message itself (the message, not the attachment),
Outlook froze ("Not Responding" in Task Manager, two times). Also, when
Outlook 2002 became unstable, a little window popped up on the taskbar
indicating CPU usage is at 100%...even though no other program is running.
And, I had no problem opening a link in an email message that had no
attachment

Then I could not even open the Help menu without Outlook going into a
freeze. On the other hand, I had no
problem opening an email with no attachment.

I tried monkeying with Security Settings; I reinstalled the entire Office
2002 Suite several times. I have tried different settings with my anti-virus
program. All to no avail

I posted the foregoing on the Community billboard and got no response so I
began to fool with it myself, and did a stupid thing. Somehow, in
reinstalling Office 2002, I corrupted my .pst files

I was able to fix and re-establish folders, but one problem remains. While I
can compose and send email, I am unable to receive email. Clicking on
“Send/Receive" produces the message “The operation failed†All of my incoming
email goes into Outlook Express. And, while I can import the Outlook Express
messages into Outlook, I am unable to receive in Outlook.

Also, I had backed up the .pst file onto a CD, but when I tried to open it I
received a message that I did not have permission to do so. In checking the
file I learned that it was “read onlyâ€, — but when I tried to change it, I
received the following message: “An error occurred applying attributes to the
file. Access is denied.â€

I would like to get this resolved as I am about to upgrade to Office 2003. I
will try your suggestion and let you know how it worked out.

I followed your suggestion, but unfortunately when I tried to open the fiile
I got a message telling me that it was not a pst file.

At this point I am ready to chuck my backed up files and rebuild...and will
settle for being ablew to receive emails in Outlook

Run scanpst.exe on the pst

Did not help. If I could just get Outlook to receive email I would be happy
to rebuild my files (I do have my calendar and contacts on my pdf.)

DL

Create a new profile with new pst
Do not attempt to open the old pst, test your OL when done.
Once all ok, then;
If you ran scanpst on the old pst and it reported no problems, then open the
old pst within OL. Do NOT import.
And copy old mail whatever to new pst

A

Adprof

I successfully created a new prfile in a new pst. However, the old pst still
will not open, even after I ran scanpst. SO, everything is in place except
one thing...I stall cannot receive email in Outlook, although I can send.

A

Adprof

I have to this point successfully recovered all my mail files, and rebuilt my
contacts and calendar. The last thing is to receive email, which I still
cannot do. I can send, but all my incoming goes into Outlook Express...using
my outlook email account addresses.

D

DL

Using the Mail Applet, in Control Panel (With OL and OE closed)
You have checked your mail accounts, and done a test send/receive?
Was this successfull? if not any err.msg.

If successfull open OL, and if not set to send/receive on opening, force a
send/receive.
If nothing received ensure OL is set to 'poll' for new mail every 10mins, go
and get a cup of coffee, and check again after a while. (do not open OE)
Ensure the 'view' setting is not hiding any received mail.
