Thank you for your patience and willingness to help. As far as I can recall,
this is how the problem started.
It started when I tried to open an email message that had an attachment.
When I tried to open the message itself (the message, not the attachment),
Outlook froze ("Not Responding" in Task Manager, two times). Also, when
Outlook 2002 became unstable, a little window popped up on the taskbar
indicating CPU usage is at 100%...even though no other program is running.
And, I had no problem opening a link in an email message that had no
attachment
Then I could not even open the Help menu without Outlook going into a
freeze. On the other hand, I had no
problem opening an email with no attachment.
I tried monkeying with Security Settings; I reinstalled the entire Office
2002 Suite several times. I have tried different settings with my anti-virus
program. All to no avail
I posted the foregoing on the Community billboard and got no response so I
began to fool with it myself, and did a stupid thing. Somehow, in
reinstalling Office 2002, I corrupted my .pst files
I was able to fix and re-establish folders, but one problem remains. While I
can compose and send email, I am unable to receive email. Clicking on
“Send/Receive" produces the message “The operation failed†All of my incoming
email goes into Outlook Express. And, while I can import the Outlook Express
messages into Outlook, I am unable to receive in Outlook.
Also, I had backed up the .pst file onto a CD, but when I tried to open it I
received a message that I did not have permission to do so. In checking the
file I learned that it was “read onlyâ€, — but when I tried to change it, I
received the following message: “An error occurred applying attributes to the
file. Access is denied.â€
I would like to get this resolved as I am about to upgrade to Office 2003. I
will try your suggestion and let you know how it worked out.
