Relative Hyperlink

Greetings.
Using Word in MS Office XP, I have a problem inserting a relative hyperlink.
I wish to insert a hyperlink which only points to a second document in the
local folder, so that the whole folder can be burned to a CD and function
correctly on various PC's. Everytime I insert a hyperlink, XP generates a
long file location, such as "C:/my documents/stuff/whatever.doc".

I have tried manually inserting a pair of backslashes, but XP changes those
to the local folder name. Tried going to File/Properties and tinkering with
the Hyperlink Base. No luck. Tried Tools/Options and different addresses
in the File Locations tab. Nope. Tried Tools/Autocorrect, and unchecked
Internet paths in the Autocorrect-as-you-type tab. Nope, although this
behaviour seems very similar to an autocorrect function.

Surely there must be a way to hyperlink to the document right next door
easily - I just can't seem to find the right trick.

Thanks for suggestions.
