Reloading Office

H

Harley

Due to space issues on my C drive, I would like to unload MS Office so that I
may reload it on my D drive. I would like to know what critial files and
optional files that I should locate and BackUp so that I will reduce 'lost'
items or settings. For example, I know how to locate the pst file, but what
about signatures? What else might I want to save?

Even if you install Office to D: by default your pst will remain within the
Documents & Settings grouping.
As will office templates
Data is not affected by an uninstall/reinstall allthough backup always
reccomended
Presumably My Documents has been moved to D?

Harley,

It can be done but what I did was to leave all of the MS products on my C
drive and install the other stuff on the D drive. I figure MS products
generally play well together and if something's going to screw up, I'd
rather it be Bejeweled or a Word document than Word itself.

My Docs is still on C under Documents and Settings. I am ok with pst files
and signatures (I found, BTW) ultimately remaining on C (docs and settings).
I was thinking that moving just the program files would still creat some
space on C.

Another user suggests leaving MS products on C, "playing well together'
theory.

I now feel comfortable enougvh to make this change, but question... should I
leave well enouigh alone (and find other things to move)?

Thoughts?

Good point. At this point, I am comfortable to make the change (I have
'tinkered' a lot). However, I also believe the Microsoft Kids play in their
‘own sand box’.

I am pondering this thought and posing it to others.

Thank you!

Moving My Documents to a seperate drive/partition has some advantages,
and will not impact on any programs, though some may have an option to
select a default doc folder.

Thanks, DL!

You are hitting on something that I have wondered about. Although I am
pretty comfortable working with (and configuring in) XP, I am not how to move
'My Documents' to the D drive. For example, can I just cut/paste it from the
standard Documents and Settings from the C Drive? Will it keep the inherent
'My Documents' folder qualities (like privacy options, for example)?

Hopefully I am expressing myself clearly, but can you elaborate on my
aforementioned thoughts?

If You right click on My Documents icon, on desktop.
Properties
then move to wherever
all remains intact, your just relocating the underlying folder

Thank you again. I never keep the 'My Documents’ icon on the desktop, so I
never thought to right-click it. I was able to access the target field that
you suggested and it all worked.

However, based on my testing, the new folder (on D) is assessable by anyone
that can log onto the PC (other users and/or guest). By being in the
‘Documents and Settings’ location, there is an integrity of being marked
‘Private’ by the WindowsXP User Accounts.

I would love to hear if there is a way to keep this ‘privacy’

Not that I know of since the 'Documents and Settings' is location
dedicated to the user profile. However since this is an Office related
newsgroup you may want to ask in a Windows newsgroup since that's
where the Windows experts tend to hang out. Here's a link to the
Windows XP newsgroups:

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Hi Harley,

When you right click on the the My Documents icon in the Start menu of Windows XP on the sharing tab is there an option for 'Make
this folder private'?
