Remaining Work not = Remaining Work !!

S

Stuart

Using Project Server 2002, Project Pro 2002, both SP1.

I have a task with 1 assignment.
The assignment/task work = 2000 hrs
The assignment/task actual work = 500 hrs
The assignmnet/task remaining work = 1500 hrs

But when I look at the remaining work on this assignment
in a Task Usage view, the sum of the remaining work (right
hand pane) = 3000 hrs !!! In a daily view instead of
seeing 8 hrs a day, I see 16 hrs.

Can anyone explain how this can happen?

Thanks

Stuart.

I am having that same problem. 500 remaining hours is
showing up as 900 in the task usage view. I have tried
using the tools:update project:being remaining work after
<enter a date> and found that no use at all.

Please post what you learn. Thank you

Did you inadvertently assign the resource to a summary task? This would
cause the doubling of hours. Let us know.

Hello Dale,

In our case, we do not have resources assigned to summary
tasks. We are seeing examples where the remaining work in
the task usage view does not equal the remaining work
entered in the resource window of a gantt chart.

I think the problem is some misunderstanding on my part of
how MSP wants to use Work and Rem Work, but I can't get a
handle on what I'm doing to cause this. I have tried to
use Tools:Tracking:update Project:start remaining work
after <some date> and found it not to work. I understand
when I get an error message about a constraint, but a lot
of time there is no error message and it still does not
work.

Any thoughts? Is this a problem in version 2002 that may
have been addressed in 2003?
Thanks.

Stuart i appologize for stepping in on your thread.

Hi Dale

Thanks for your reply.
No we do not assign resouces to summary tasks.

I will explain a little more from my experience of this
problem.

Assume there are 8 hrs work a day for the remainder of the
project. If I enter 7.99 actual work for the next
scheduled day then there are no problems and the task
usage view's remaining work stays in line with the Gantt
view.

However if I enter 8.01 hrs of actual work for the next
scheduled day then the daily remaining work in task usage
doubles, and we see 16 hrs work a day. The duration stays
the same, and we are left with twice as much work than
expected in the task usage view, but the correct amount of
work in the gantt view.

If we save the plan in this state we find find that the
next time it is opened there are still 16 hrs work
scheduled for each remaing day in task usage, but now the
sum of the remaining work does again = remaining work in
the gantt view. The duration has been adjusted
accordingly.

Any ideas?

Regards

Stuart.
