Remaining Work splits out beyond original finish date

This problem is occuring only with tasks that are assigned to material type
resources. The costs are updated monthly using the Task Usage view by our
Accounting Tech. For some reason the remaining work ($1=1 unit) is splitting
and extending out beyond the original end dates. No constraints or
dependencies. No "split tasks in progress". I'm baffled by this behavior.
Even when I pull the task back and zero out the remaining work, the next time
the project is "synced to actuals" and saved the task is again split and
pushed out. Sometimes several years.

As you enter actuals into the task usage view - if there is any variance
between what you enter and what was scheduled, project will alter the
remaining schedule, assuming that your accounting tech is updating the
assignments in the task usage view with less units than the project is
expecting then the schedule will push out (Without showing splits ... splits
imply a gap in the work, not less effort applied)

The bit that bothered me was the word 'years'
