Reminder in Excel WSheet

Is there a way to create a 'reminder' in an excel 2000
worksheet? What I am thinking about is: when a date in a
cell is reached, a reminder pane appears on screen.

you could use conditional formating for this and checking within this
with a formula such as
=A1<=TODAY()
