Do the server extensions have to be installed on a site, in order to edit
the site remotely using Frontpage (2003)?

Yes, the live/remote server must have the FP extensions installed in order to publish or edit via
http.

Actually they're installed for your domain on the server but Yes
they must be installed to edit live with FP 2003.
