Remote to Local

L

Linda

I have to ask this again.... please help me figure this out...I have tried
again to publish FROM remote site, TO local site. In one sense the publish
process was a success because I CAN see the whole site... BUT only if I
access one page at a time from the file list. I know the links are present,
I can check all of that, but the process that makes the link WORK, doesn't.
Even in preview in browser, the links do not work. What oh What am I
missing? I need this to work so that I can stop maintaining the website AT
my workplace, and do it instead from home.
Give me ALL your ideas please. I'll try everything.

Note: If you are using FP2003, whichever site (the copy on your machine or the copy on the remote
server) you open first becomes your local, and the where you are publishing to, becomes the remote
site.

Does the folder that contains your web, ( the folder you published to on your computer ) have the
blue globe on it if your browse to its location using Windows Explorer.??

If not, FrontPage doesn't think it's a web.

The easiest thing to do, is create a new empty web somewhere on your computer. Some where easy to
find.

Then, close your new empty web.

Open the published web that lives out in cyberspace. The one with the http://yourweb.com address.
When it is open, click File > Publish web ( or site in FP 2003 ) and when it asks for the location,
point it to the new empty web you just made. The address you point it to would start with C:\

Steve that doesn't work either. I created a new local web published the
remote to it and all of the links and theme properties are broken. I've
also tried creating a new local web and then importing the remote web and
then publishing it to a new folder on my computer to no avail. It appears
to me that if you remote webserver doesn't have fp 2002 extensions that you
can't use frontpage. Thusly I downloaded the site with wsftp pro and the
site is viewable from windows explorer and looks correct until I open it in
frontpage at this point frontpage breaks all of the links.
Any other ideas would sure be appreciated.
Before xp sp2 I had no trouble.

If the remote server doesn't have the FP extensions, then you have to download the site via a FTP
application to a folder on your HD, then open that folder in FP, and allow FP to make it a web.

If you have used themes, shared borders, include pages or navigation components, you will have to
re-create/re-build those items as a site on a server without the extensions doesn't have the FP
configuration info needed for FP to re-create/re-build the above noted items.

Are you saying that the site has to have fp extensions to use the ftp
feature in fp2003?

No. The server has to have extensions before you can publish using http://
One benefit of having extensions is that you can use the http:// protocol to publish both to and
from the server, and also to open the live web in FrontPage and edit live on the server.

The ftp:// protocol "unfortunately" does not publish or download all of the components needed by
your web, even when using a 3rd party ftp program.

Also, to be honest you don't need a 3rd part program to bring your web back to your machine. You
can do it with Internet Explorer. In IE enter ftp://yourwebsitename.com and click Go. Log in when
prompted. Browse to the root folder for your web and then click on it and drag it to a location on
your machine. When prompted select "Copy here."

I'm working with FP2003 both at work and at home. The website I manage is
www.img.net/erabc I've copied and pasted all your comments to word, will
print them, read through, do some research, try to understand and make it
work. If you have further comments, I certainly will appreciate it. Linda

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I thought maybe there was an easy way to
repair all of the problems that crop up when you download a site with an ftp
program. Thanks to Steve's suggestion there is. Thanks to all of you.
