Remove Reveal formatting

I am running XP and Office 2003/Outlook 2003
Recently i have received some Word doc attachments that when opened show all
the formatting throughout the document.
How can i remove the formatting so i can use the document?

Click on the paragraph symbol (¶) on the toolbar in Word to toggle showing
formatting and not showing formatting.

Thks, I tried that and it worked on one doc and not another.
Does this happen because the sender has formatted the doc incorrectly?

Should work on any document, even protected ones. Don't know why would not
work on some Word documents and not others.
