Remove/save folder with 17,000 emails?

Running Outlook 2003 & Win XP Pro fully updated---

I've got a folder with over 17,000 emails that's slowing down folder changes
and email viewing within Outlook.

I'd like to keep those emails (16 years worth of exchanges with the kids and
family)-- but is there a way to pull them out of Outlook and store them
elsewhere so the program speeds up?

You can do an Archive on that folder to move them to a separate pst-file.
File-> Archive...
A thing that helped me speeding up the display of such folders it to apply a
filter to the view so it will only display the items of this month.

Thanks, I did the archive thing-- but it only copied messages from the last
year or so. What am I doing wrong?
