Removing design templates

Once I have selected a design template and applied it to a presentation, is there any way to completely remove design templates from the presentation?

You would apply a blank template.
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00245.htm has information on how to
customize a blank template. You'd just skip the customization part and
create a truly blank template (if you don't already have one).
