removing extra space before headings at top of page (Word xp)

Hedy

My heading styles are formatted to allow extra space
above, but I want this to be removed if the heading falls
at the top of a page.

I thought there was a way to do this in earlier versions
of Word. I can't find any reference to it in the online
help.

Anyone figured out how to do this?

Thanks!

Space Before is automatically suppressed at the top of a page provided the
paragraph is not formatted as "Page break before" or preceded by a manual
page break. In Word 2002 you can suppress this space even after a page or
column break by checking the appropriate Compatibility Option.

Here's what I've found reduces, but doesn't eliminate, the problem.

1. Go to TOOLS/OPTIONS and click the COMPATIBILITY tab.

2. Scroll down and put a check mark next to:
-- "Suppress extra line spacing at top of page," and
-- "Suppress space Before after a hard page or column break."
Personally, I also check mark "Supress extra line spacing at bottom of page."

These entries are alphabetical, so you'll find them near the bottom of the listing with other "S" entries.

Even when the options are activated, I find that the first occurrence of a paragraph with "Space Before" (at the top of a page) usually doesn't honor the setting. Sometimes, I find other pages ignore this setting too -- especially following section breaks. Still, it usually fixes most of the pages. I hope it works for you.
