Removing highlighting

I removed the highlighting from a numbered paragraph (not numbered
headings--just bullet & numbering style). The highlighting disappeared from
the paragraph but not from the number. How can I get rid of it?

Display nonprinting characters (Ctrl+*), then select just the paragraph mark
and make sure it is not highlighted.
