removing social security numbers

I and my co-workers need to remove all occurances of these numbers from our
Outlook emails. We would also like to remove them from our Word and Excel
files too.

Is there an automated process within Office to scan our files and identify
which ones we need to edit? I've tried the wild card approach (***-**-****)
but it hasn't worked.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How did they get there in the first place?

Outlook searches don't support wildcards. I can't think of any alternative
to a manual approach.
