Removing WDS

R

Rainald Taesler

As I do not know any better place to ask:
Wanting to remove all of Office an ON because of installing the Office
2007 and ON 2007 finals, I also want to remove WDS.
I can not un-install it via "Add and remove software".

Uninstalling is a must as I always had problems with it and at present
on each reboot an error-masg appears that "Windows Desktop Search
System Tray" caused a problem and at times thius is followed by
another error-msg that "NMIndexStoreSvr.exe" caused a problem.
There is no icon in the IconTary (TaskTray).
And the Index-Options applet only shows that OneNote is the only thing
indexed, Outlook Express is missing ...

How could I manage to get completely rid of WDS??

Rainald
P.S. The version installed is 03.005824.280

Ben M. Schorr - MVP shared these words of wisdom:
Why can't you uninstall from Add/Remove?

I cannot say WHY.
The system just does not let me - without telling me anything
[siiiigh]
If I click the Remove-button, nothing happens.

It was just the same with OneNote 2007B2TR (but with the help of the
928218 article [BTW: terribly written, idiotic mistakes in the German
translation] I could remove all of Office BTR and ON and now I'm a
happy camper now with the final(s). But WDS is still there and behaves
really badly.

With this experience I assume that there might be 3 - 5 dozens of
entries in the registry which have to removed manually. I would do so,
would I have any instructions.
It appears as "Windows Desktop Search" on my list

On mine too ;-)
and would apparently be uninstallable
(though I haven't tried it).

Isn't this a cotradiction to the above?
You ask "why" I cannot uninstall it and assume that it's
"uninstallable" ...

Rainald
P.S. Do you have any idea on where I might ask in addition in order to
meet some specialists?

I *KNOW* [siiiiiigh]

But the translation is idiotic if
"*Important* Do not close the Windows Installer folder."
(Step 2, 7.)
is translated to
"Nicht *Wichtig*: schließen Sie den Windows Installer-Ordner".

And it is really not understandable at many points.

As these are complicated procedures IMO a *reliable* text would be
needed. And a better one which would show easier ways for the
repeating procedures, be it for determining the strings in the
apocryphal registry keys or just the MSI calls in Step 1.
Deleting the string in the re-opened "RUN"-dialog and re-typing the
parameters for every position instead of using Copy+Paste is quite
something ...

I assume that we'll have something like hell once the trials will be
available and people have to remove the B2TR.
Wouldn't there be a way for MS to provide some tool (or at least a
script)??

Anyway: Prior to checking on news, I had just starting a mail with a
huge THANK YOU for your assistance.
So I say it here.

I'll put getting the translation looked at on my to do list...

Thank you!

BTW: ina German NG soone yesterday was mentioning a ClenUp tool.
Would this be of help?

Back to this thread's topic:
What could I do to remove the *&%$§")?` WDS??
It does neither work, nor can it be removed.

Could you possibly use some of the contacts in the backrooms?

The Windows Install Clean Up Utility? It might get your system in a
state where you can install WDS again...It's worth a shot.

If I knew how to remove it, I'd have already told you ;)
I am asking though (I didn't ask earlier, because it was Thanksgiving
vacation time here).

Oh, did not know that.
I'm sure teher a people at MS who'd know how it might work.
Main problem: how to reach them.
I asked in XP groups too. To no avail.

Thanks again

Not at all. I'm simply saying that I don't see any reason why you couldn't
uninstall it. It looks like it should be a fairly straightforward process.
I assume you're logged in with an account that has admin privs on that machine?

Ok, thanks for clarifying.
Misunderstanding on my side. :-( :-(
I'm sorry.
It looks like it should be a fairly straightforward process.

Straightforward to no go on my system.
It may have to do with the fact that from the beginning with the WDS
Beta I was having troubles on this machine (my TabletPC) and ON Beta2
always errored with WDS not being installed the right way.
The latest WDS update fixed that. But it could be that just some
broken rests are hanging around somewhere ..
I assume you're logged in with an account that has admin privs on
that machine?

For sure!
In the German XP NG a suggestion was to log on under a different user
with admin rights and to install it again to the reinstall it.
Did not help.

The situation is as follows;
1.) It can not be uninstalled;
2.) Error
a) The indexing status icon is not present in the TaskTray;
b) on each Windows startup I receive an error message
"Windows desktop Search Tray has a determined
a problem and has to be closed ..."
and the possibility to notify MS.
The same error-msg appears when I try to search using the WDS toolbar
in the TaskBar;
c) Search does not find anything;
d) The indexing-options applet does not include Outlook Express mail
(as it does on my desktop).

I'm absolutely clueless and helpless [siiiigh]

Rainald
P.S. The beast does no even appear on the list of the "Windows
Installer Clean Up"
