Renamed tab .xls>3 receiving a error but can't fix

I need help renaming a tab - the system just keeps giving me an error message
and won't let me rename? suggestions?

FWIW, just tried successfully to name a tab in xl2003 (my curr ver) as:
..xls>3
(but I'd usually refrain from using mathematical operators in sheetnames)

Anyway, believe the restricted sheet name characters are: : \ / ? * [ or
]
