Renaming a column or heading?

My husband and I work together.
He somehow changed the COLUMN heading to 1,2,3,4, 5... from A,B,C,D..
he cannot figure out how to change back. I see from the posts that it's not
possible, but he must have done something to change this?
Ideas?
