repagination takes forever in 2007

I am working with very large documents in Word 2007, and making global
changes to the document. When I make these changes, then Ctl End, the
document does not update the page numbers in the view toolbar.

Note - I am NOT using a footer with page numbers embedded - I am talking
about Word's toolbar.

Any ideas?
