Repairing Word 2002 on Sony Laptop that came with Word 2002 preinstalled but no CD

I have a Sony laptop (PCG-FX170) running Win ME that came with Word
2002 installed. I installed ( not upgraded) Windows XP on the machine.
The Word 2002 files are still there but since the registry entries are
lost I cannot run Word 2002. If I run Winword.exe it says the
application needs to be reinstalled. Since Sony did not provide an
install program for Word 2002 ( only a recovery CD that would also
reinstall Win ME ) I need to figure out if there is a way to recreate
the registry entries so that I can use Word 2002.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Personally, I would be on the phone with Sony and request my legally
licensed software installation CDs. These are required in order to
install SPs. As of Office XP SP3 they are attempting to workaround
this situation, however there are several cases in which the full SP3
patch fails and the installation media is required.

I would approach them from this angle, that you need to install a SP,
which also includes security updates, and you are being asked to
provide the installation CD which you do not have.

If they refuse then I would call Microsoft and explain that you did
not receive your installation media and Sony refuses to provide it to
you. I know in the case of CD keys Microsoft will help you out in the
event the OEM refuses to assist. They may on installation media too -
that I don't know.

Otherwise you really don't have any other options and I don't consider
their "recovery CD" an option. Quite frankly, if that is all a
computer manufacturer will supply then they have lost my business.
It's too bad most people do not realize how important your
installation media is these days. :-(
