repeated crash when I start the excel

Every time I start excel, it crashes within a few seconds. I have
removed office, re-installed. No change.

You're missing a Service Pack.

You should be at 12.2.1 to run properly in Snow Leopard.

UPDATE it!!!

Every time you re-install it, you take it back to "No service packs at all"
which is the cause of your problem.

Don't re-install things on a Mac: it just makes things worse :)

Please first update your Excel to 12.2.1. If the problem persists, I suspect it is related to corrupted font on your Mac. Bob gave detailed steps of fixing the corrupted fonts in a separate thread:

1. Launch Apple's Font Book app & run the Validate Fonts & Resolve Duplicates routines. You'll find instructions on both in Font Book's Help.

2. Shut down (not a Restart) your Mac, wait 1-2 minutes then power up.

3. If the problem continues make sure to quit all Office programs, then go to:
User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008
& delete the file named Office Font Cache (12)
