Repeated Documents

Recently, I bought a new Hp laptop equipped with Microsoft Works which I'm
not familiar with. I installed Microsoft Office 97 successfully into it as
I'm more familiar with Microsoft Office 97. However, when I open any
document(in word, powerpoint or excel), a message would appear saying that
I'm trying to open the same dcument twice(or another document with the same
name) although I have not done so. How can I rectify this problem so that the
message does not reappear again?

I suspect this only occurs when you open the documents outside the
application and doesn't happen if you use File/Open? If that's the
case then you'll need to recreate the file associations. Go to
Start/Run and run the following:

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash.

Yes, it only occurs when I open the documents outside the application and
doesn't happen when I use File/Open.
I tried running what you recommended
-when I ran "winword /r" , the Run simply disappears and nothing else happens
-when I ran " excel /regsever" , this note appeared: " 'egsever.xls' could
not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file
location is correct. If you are trying to open the file from your list of
most recently used files on the File menu, make sure that the file has not
been renmed, moved or deleted."
-when I ran "powerpnt /regsever" , Microsoft Powerpoint opened up as if I
had opened the application, normally.
-when I ran "msaccess /regsever" , this note appeared:" Windows cannot find
'msaccess'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To
search for a file, click the Start button, and the click Search."

It sounds like the file associations were recreated for Word. The
application shouldn't start since you are running a command to force
the recreation of the file associations so no 'news' is good news in
this case. :)

For Excel and PowerPoint, you have /regsever rather than /regserver.
(Regserver is short for register server if that helps.). I suspect you
don't have Access installed and that's why MSAccess could not be
found.

Try opening a Word document and see if the file associations were
recreated properly. Here's what is happening, when you open a document
outside the application the information for what application to start
and then the file for the application to open is passed by a command.
The commands you are currently using include the file name twice and
as a result the application is attempting to open the files twice.

If your Word documents open correctly then run the /regserver command
for Excel and PowerPoint.

I am having the same problem opening Excel documents from shortcuts. I tried
the excel /regserver command and all it did was change it from opening the
documents 3 times to twice. Any suggestions?
