Replace Text with Merge Field vs. Insert Text with Merge Field

I have a form I am populating with data using mail merge fields. I us
underscores as lines where the client is to write their data. I a
populating with the info I already have in some places. When I insert
merge field, I would like to use the merge field to replace the existin
underscore so the length of the line stays the same. For example:
have Name: and then 15 underscores. I would like to insert the name Jo
Smith (9 characters) and the result be Joe Smith then 6 underscores.
have more than one merge field on a line (Name:____________________
Email:_________________) and inserting data of varying lengths throw
off the formatting of the line and sometimes makes it wrap to a secon
line. I do not want to remove the underscores completely since I don'
always have the same data to populate with for each client and want the
to fill in where it is blank if I haven't populated that field

Instead of underline formatting, make use of single-cell tables. Set a
fixed width and height and clear all borders except for the bottom one.
