Replacing resources on a published project

L

Laura Williams

Greetings,

When attempting to replace resources on a published project, where NO
actuals have been accrued, I get the message that if I replace this resource
I may have unexpected results later. Surely you are able to change
resources after publishing and before status has been recorded?

Any advice is very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Laura Williams

Laura:

How are you attempting to replace the resources? What procedure are you
using? Yes you can replace resources and you can do it even after the
project has actuals, or the tasks have actuals, you must, however, do it in
a way that doesn't cause problems.

Laura:

Generally, using the replace button in the Assign Resource Dialog (talking
heads icon) is your best bet if you have already reported progress on the
plan by changing percents complete or posting actuals.

Hi Gary,

We've tried using the Resource Assignment dialogue box (Heads on the
toolbar;), the Task Form view from a split screen, plus a number of other
alternatives, including the resource substitution wizard. What is your
recommended method?

Thanks,

Hi Gary,
That is one of the methods that is giving us the error.
The exact wording of the message is "The resource
assignment has been published to the Microsoft Project
Server database. Changing the resource that is assigned
to the task could cause unexpected behavior on that
assignment later. Do you still want to change the
resource". We have had the same warning on tasks with
progress and task with none - both using the "head
button". Any more thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks - Laura

Laura:

It's not exactly an error, it's more a warning. The question is, what do
expect to happen. If you want to leave the actual work with the original
resource, in a task view, use Window > Split. In the resource area in the
bottom window, set the remaining work for the current resource to zero and
click OK. Publish new and changed for the selected task. Now add the new
resource to the task setting the correct work value. Publish as before.
