report with a few columns

i have a report with a few columns how do i make it that the page header and
footer spans the width of the whole page and not just of the first column

Click the last tab in the Page Setup dialog (File menu) where you set up
your columns.

Uncheck the box that says "Same as Detail".

You can now widen the report to the whole width you need for the header
sections, without messing up the width you defined for your columns.
