Reporting Time to a task

I am new to project managing so I have a few questions. (Our firm is using
Project Pro 2003 along with Project Server in order to track the progress of
projects)

1) Is there an easy way to set a task as "complete" even if the reported
time for that task doesn't match the estimated time for that task? For
instance, when a resource updates their timesheet report in project server
for a task such as "order servers" which was initially scheduled to take 1
hour, but only took 30 minutes...(and the task is actually complete b/c they
finished the order in 30 minutes instead of 1 hour)...what is the best way to
set this task as complete, without changing their reported time to match the
projected time?

2) Also, what if the resource estimated a task taking 2 hours to complete,
but they report 6 hours for the task in project server? Does project reflect
that it took them much longer to complete this task, therefore throwing the
schedule of the project off?

Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated!

1. The team member should report their Actual Work on the task as .5 hours
and adjust the Remaining Work to 0 hours to reflect the early finish. You
should teach your team members how to adjust the Remaining Work value for
tasks that they believe will finish late (by increasing the Remaining Work
value) or have actually finished early.

2. If the task actually took 6 hours when it was scheduled to take 2 hours,
the system will show the task finished 4 hours late (assuming you saved a
baseline for the project) and will adjust the schedule accordingly.

Hope this helps.

Dale,
Thanks so much for your help. Currently, our employees report the number of
hours of work done per day on their projects. We account for a total of at
least 8 hours per day for each employee, on all of their projects, including
"administrative" time. If I change the setting in project to allow them to
report their remaining work (in order to fix #1 of my issue below), will this
change their reporting capabilities for daily time? Will they still be able
to report their amount of hours every day, but also have the ability to
report remaining work?

Thanks,
Tanky

If you allow team members to adjust the Remaining Work value for a task
assignment, they will still be able to report their actual amount of hours
worked every day along with being able to adjust the Remaining Work
accordingly. I believe this will improve your progress reporting process
greatly, as team members will be able to signal you in advance of a
potential late finish to a task, and to explicitly tell you they have
finished early on a task. Hope this helps.
