Reports in Project Web Access

Tim

Hello,

I have a question about reports in MS Project: how can a
Portfolio manager/Executive access reports (the
canned/custom reports we generate from Professional) with
Project Web Access if he/she does not have access to
Professional?
Thank you in advance.

They can't. If you want someone to access features of Project Pro they
need to have access to project pro. You can give them Open access but
remember to hold back the Save in Project permission from their
group/category

Thank you for the reply. I guess the Executives have to
install MS Project Pro client on their machine in order
to benefit MS Project reports capabilities.

Yes. If they feel they need those reports they will need Pro.

Now depending on the report often you can create Portfolio Analyzer
views that can mimic some of the reports. But it depends on the report.

I would recommend that work very hard to create Views for your executives in
Project Web Access rather than giving each of them Microsoft Project.
Although PWA Views cannot exactly match your Reports in Microsoft Project,
they can probably come close, and in some ways might even be superior to the
Reports. For example, you can create powerful Views in the Project Center
in PWA which use graphical indicators to show information like project
slippage, cost over budget, degree of risk, etc. You can also create some
tremendous Views in the Portfolio Analyzer that beat anything a Report has
to offer.

To come up with these PWA Views for your executives, you would probably need
to meet individually or in groups with your executives, show them what is
possible in PWA using some sample views, and then "zero in" on their exact
reporting needs. This may lead you to create additional custom fields to
meet their reporting needs. You would probably also want to offer them some
training on how to use this "self service" environment in PWA.

Just some more ideas in response to your question. Hope this helps.

Hi Tim.

If you are interested in playing a little, I believe that
on the MS site - Downloads section (Download number 34)
there is a COM add-in that you can download to Create
Reports in XML. Though I haven't played with it, this may
give you an option to consider. You put this add-in in
your project plan (You will need to create XSL templates
for your reports) and when run against your plan and your
report is generated, you can save the report to a file.
From here, you can create a link in PWA (in your user's
home page) to this file such that your executives can
access any report you create that is in a shared drive on
your network.

Not sure if this will help you but I hope it gives you at
least another option.
