Request for password upon database close

I am using ACCESS 2007 with a password encrypted database. I have all the
latest OFFICE patches. I have not changed the security settings for several
months, but now I am asked for the database password when I close the
database. If I enter the correct password I am asked again. If I enter the
password I am asked for the third time. If I enter the password one more time
I am told that the password is not valid.

The only way to close the database is to click CANCEL when asked for the
password during close.

Can anyone tell me why ACCESS requests the passworrd upon close ?
