Resequence figure numbers

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Using automated figure numbers in captions - have deleted a few, and the remaining ones do not automatically renumber.

How do I force the figure numbers to resequence? In Word 2007 on a Windows computer, it's just the F9 key. What works for Word 2008 on the Mac?

Actually, it's F9 in Mac Word as well ‹ or at least it *was* until Apple
decided to expropriate that keystroke for Expose :) You have several
options available to you:

1- In System Preferences> Expose & Spaces, remove the F9 assignment which
will allow Word to use it,

2- Use Word's Customize Keyboard feature to assign a different keystroke to
the UpdateFields command. [I have Shift+Command+Option+U assigned but can't
recall if it's a built-in alternate to F9 or whether I assigned it myself.],

3- Use Select All, then Control/Right-Click a caption & use the Update
Fields command from the contextual menu,

4- Select the Print Options preference for Update Field. Thee fields will
update when you switch to/from Print Layout view or Print Preview.

Thank you, Bob, for taking the time to help me. All of this worked. I've been a power user of MS Office on Windows for over 10 years, but my experience with Vista this last year led me to move to the Mac. I'm super pleased with the move, but still getting used to figuring out how to do the things I already know to do.

Thanks again.
