reserve equipment as a resource

For each task, I like to assign the person that will perform the task, and
the equipment that needs to be reserved for it. I have defined both the
people and the different equipment as "work"-type resources. This allows me
to get a good overview of the allocation of both people and equipment.
However, at the same time, our people use web access to give feedback about
status of their assigned task. The problem is that if a person that was
assigned a task indicates that they have completed their task, in MS project,
the task will only appear to be 50% completed. The reason for that is that MS
project also expects "the equipment" to perform its part of the task (as if
it was a person).
I could define the equipment as a "material"-type resource, but then the
resource is not linked to a calendar, which means I can't for instance easily
check over/under allocation etc.

Is there any good solution for reserving the required equipment for a task,
without project actually expecting the equipment to perform the task ?
