Resource Availability Help!

D

Diqs

I just have a quick question I am hoping someone call help me out with.

I am taking an introduction to Microsoft Project class at university and
need help with assigning specific working hours for a resource.

I have a resource (Programmer) for my project. The programmer is only
available for 10 days out of the month.

How would I go about doing this in Microsoft Project? I have already entered
in the resource (programmer) information into Project.

The calander used for the project is the default (standard) calander.

There are other resources being used.... but the programmer is the only
resource (person) that is available 10 days per month.

Do I have to create a new calander and apply that calander as the base
calander for the programmer?

The only thing i saw about changing work days is going to: Tools > Changing
Work Times > Options tab at bottom. But i think if i change the number of
working days to 10... it does it for the base calander of the project?

Any help is appreciated!

HI Digs,

When you entered the programmer into the resource sheet, a calendar
has already been created for him/her. Double click on the
resource's name and click the working time tab (2003). If the
programmer is only available specific days out of every month,
you'll need to select the days s/he is unavailable and mark them as
non-working. Any task assigned to the programmer will now only be
scheduled for working time in his/her calendar.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks for the help.

I've taken 2 screen shots, just want to make sure I end up changing the
working times for the right calendar.

Screenshot 1: I got this screenshot by doing the following: View > Resource
Sheet > Double click on resource name (in this case the name is Kathy) >
clicked on "changed working time tab"

http://www.zone.at/memberpages/member/filebase_new/S/sadio/screenshot_1.jpg

Some questions about screenshot 1:
- Is this the resource calendar for Kathy? If so, is her working time based
off the base (default) calendar?
- If i were to change the working times using this method outlined above and
in the screenshot will it only affect katthy or the base (default) calendar?

Screenshot 2: I got this screenshot by doing the following: Tools > Change
Working Time

http://zone.at/memberpages/member/filebase_new/S/sadio/screenshot2.jpg

Some questions about screenshot 2:
- What is the difference between screenshot 1 and screenshot 2 (if any)?

With what i am trying to accomplish will both methods work?

Thanks!

Some questions about screenshot 1:

[Julie] Yes, it's Kathy's calendar.
If so, is her working time based
off the base (default) calendar?

[Julie] Yes, Kathy's calendar is based upon the "Standard" calendar.
- If i were to change the working times using this method outlined

[Julie] It will only change Kathy's calendar. You are creating
exceptions in Kathy's calendar -- those "exceptions" are the
differences between Kathy's calendar and the Standard calendar that
her calendar is based upon.

Some questions about screenshot 2:
- What is the difference between screenshot 1 and screenshot 2 (if
any)?

[Julie] No difference. Just two different ways of getting to the
same Resource calendar.
With what i am trying to accomplish will both methods work?

[Julie] Yes, either will work fine. No need to repeat the process
in both places.

Thanks for the help. It's very much appreciated! I tried it out and it
worked like a charm. I'm now able to get my resources to work around 10 days
per month... give or take a few days depending on how many days are in the
month and whatnot.

Thanks once again, its very much appreciated!
