Resource Availability

Any suggestions on the best way to set up resource
availability in the enterprise pool? I asked all managers
to supply the percentage of time available for project
work and got back ranges from 5% to 75%......as you can
imagine when something is assigned to a resource with 5%
availability out of the gate I have over allocation
problems.......My thought is to set everyone at 100% to
accurately see the demand.

Ken --

If you are talking about setting the Max. Units value for each resource in
the Enterprise Resource Pool, I would favor setting full-time employees at
100% Units, if they are theoretically available for project work on a
full-time basis. Remember, however, that the Max. Units value is primarily
used by Micrsosoft Project to determine whether a resource is overallocated
in any time period.

As far as actually assigning resources to tasks, you should use a Units
value that represents their real commitment to a task. For example, if a
resource is assigned to work only 10 hours over a 5-day time period, then
the Units should be set 25% for that resource's assignment on the task.
This will more accurately reflect the resource's real work commitment on the
task, and will save you lots of misery when it comes time to level
overallocated resources.

Hope these thoughts help.
