Resource filtering / restricting access, how?

D

David MacLeary

I'd like to restrict the enterprise resource pool in Project
Professional 2003 so that a Project Manager can only assign resources
that fall into a certain category, such as resources with the same
division as the PM, or same location, or those that fall into a
certain RBS structure. Or perhaps only allow them access to Generic
resources only, no "real people".

It seems as though you either have access to nobody, or you have
access to the entire pool.

I realize you can filter by custom fields in Proj Pro when picking
resources from the ERP, but those filters don't prohibit access which
is what we need. We need to enforce it, to guarantee a PM will not
assign a resource that they're normally not allowed to use.

We want them to only be able to pick from Generic's, publish the plan,
then a Resource Manager will assign the "real people".

Possible? How?

THANKS!!

What you are talking about is the process your company
will use to assign Resources. The tool will not be able
to accomplish what you want. You need to draft a process
that all Project Managers will follow when setting up
projects and include in the process how the Resource
Managers and the Project Managers will address the
following: initial assignments; conflicts between
multiple projects needs; changing Resources; negotiating
changes such as when a Resource does not finish a previous
assignment in time to start as planned. You will also
need some communications guidelines around how to manage
this.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg to successfully do
Resource Management.
