Resource Management

Hello,

I have a particular scenario in which I need to report on the department for
each resource over time. But the resources change departments on a regualr
basis. What I need is someway of recording this ....

For example Bill is one of my resources. His movement are as follows :-

2nd January Homologation Department
12th January Regulatory Department
16th February Current Affairs
5th April Legal
14th June Homolgation Department

All other resources get assigned in a simialr way.

However I haven't found a way to record this anticipated or historic
movement of resources from department to department, which makes it very
difficult to predict resource workload over time for a given department.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how this can be done ?

Thanks

Ian

Does this person actually CHANGE departments or are they just doing
work for different departments? In other words: does this person's
manager change this often or does he still report to the same person
but is doing work for different groups over time?

Hi Brian,

They do actually change departments. This is quite a common scenario. For
example consider

a) a contractor who spends several weeks in one department then moves to
another after their contracted period
b) a student/graduate doing the cooks tour of different departments
during their first year
c) induction training for new recruits

I get that it is common but I needed to understand your situation.

Will they commonly be finished with their assignments on a project they
were working on while in dept X before they move to dept Y?

If so Im thinking you could look at Assignment RBS in the portfolio
Analyzer. It will contain the value of the RBS field for the resource
associated with that assignment. The thing Im not sure about is if the
asisgnment RBS for the assignments in Project 1 will change when the
resource's RBS value changes. This would be something for you to
experiment with on a few test projects.

My feeling is that it will persist and hold the value that the resource
had when the assignment was made but I'm not 100% sure.

This also assumes that your RBS lookup table is based on your org
structure. If it is not then create an Enterprise Resoruce outline code
that is based on your org structure and use this field for my
suggestion.

To test:
Create a resource and give it an RBS value.
Create a test project and tasks.
Assign this resource to the tasks.
Publish the project
Rebuild the OLAP cube
Create a Portfolio Analyzer view that uses the Assignment RBS (or the
field you created) as a dimension.
Change the Resources RBS value.
REbuild the cube
See if the value changed in the cube
Now republish the project
Rebuild the cube again
See if it changed.

Hello Brian,

Thanks for your suggestion. I haven't tried it yet but I will.
