Resource Name sorting by Group & Name

M

MarkP

I am creating a new resource pool for a large organization I want to sort
resources by group first to make it easier for the PM's to locate their teams.

I have done the following:
1) Sorted the Resource Sheet by Group and Name
2) Checked Permanently renumber resources

Now in the Task Sheet view, when I click on the Resource Name column, all
names are sorted by Name.

Am I missing something?

Thanks

Hello Mark,

I believe the order of resource names shown in the Task Sheet is by
assignment order, not by anything to do with the resource sorting.
To make it easier to find tasks the teams are assigned to consider
adding the Resource Group field to the Task Sheet and showing your
PMs how to filter by Resource Group.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie,

my question is really about the Resource Name display sequence in the drop
down.

At this point, I am just tying to prototype the project plan.

I am adding my first task. When assigning the resource to that task, I want
the names listed by group then name

thanks,
Mark

Mark,

What release of Project (including service pack) are you using?
Using Project 2003, SP-3 I see the Resource Name field showing in
the Task Sheet in ID sort order. The list of names in the Assign
Resource dialog will stay in alphabetic order by employee name.

Julie,

I am using MS Project 2007 (12.0.4518.1014) MSO (12.0.06320.5000)

Not sure what service patch (can you determine?)

I still don't think I'm clear on my problem.

On Resource Sheet:
1) Sorted the Resource Sheet by Group and Name
2) Checked Permanently renumber resources

On Task Sheet:
1) Enter new Task
2) Selected Resource Name from drop down
--- What I see: Resource Names in Alpha sequence
--- What I WANT: Resource names Sorted by Group and Name (same as I see
on Resource Sheet)

If you can send me an alternate email, I can send you screenshots or video.

Thanks, I appreciate the help,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the information that you are using Project 2007. I have
run through the same process as you outline and I'm sorry to report,
I see the same thing. After sorting and renumbering, the list of
Resources appear in the resource name drop-down in the Task Sheet
(left side of the Gantt chart view) in alphabetic order, not paying
attention to the sorted order. Sorry :-(

I am using Project with SP-2 installed, so this is not something
that has been changed with service packs. Sorry.

Short of entering some sort of sort order in front of the resource's
name, I don't have a suggestion. You can use the Assign Resource
dialog and filter by group, but it still won't help with the list in
the Task Sheet.

I do still encourage you to download and install at least SP-1 as it
doesn't appear you are running the service pack. Run Microsoft
Update and ensure you are running the latest service packs to the
programs.

Hi Khanderao ,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

If you're serious about using Project, then I would recommend you take an
introductory course lasting at least 2 days, as Project is not easy to learn
and there are many traps for the unwary. Meanwhile, you might like to have
a look at my free series for beginners on Microsoft Project in the TechTrax
ezine, particularly #, at this site: http://tinyurl.com/2xbhc or this:

(Perhaps you'd care to rate the articles before leaving the site, :)
Thanks.)

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hello Khanderao,

Welcome to Project. Mike Glen has given you some very valuable
guidance -- both the suggestion to sign up for a class on MS
Project, as well as a link to his excellent series of tutorials.

The Project newsgroup that you have posted to is free peer-to-peer
support where answers are provided by volunteers, such as Mike and
I. We reply to questions posted as we can but do not provide free
email support.

Review the material from Mike, take a class and post as many
questions to this newsgroup as you need to. Someone will pitch in
with answers as we can.
